EARLY MERBEIN HOUSES & THEIR RESIDENTS

Housing is a vital part of our social history, as it tells the story of not only how people lived, but is tangible evidence of a society's challenges and successes.
MDHS members, Lyn Adams and Jill Thomson have already collected, in words and pictures, a significant amount of information on Merbein & District's early homes. Many of these have already featured in the 'Merbein Historian' and in an 'Early Houses Display' in the MDHS Society's Rooms over recent times.
We are now in the final process of adding to and compiling a record of all the houses submitted and publishing them in a single book, 'Early Merbein & District Houses' which will feature the information/images collected. The book will be published in 2021.
The houses to be featured in the proposed book have been submitted by owners, ex-owners, descendants of the original owners and interested community members. Although time is running out, if anyone still wishes to be part of this project, we will accept submissions until the end of October 2020.
The dwelling must have been lived in, but there is no restriction on the type of construction. Other relevant details on the houses (if known) would be the location, date of construction, ownership, builder, construction materials/methods and size. Photos of the house, including internal rooms or a sketched house or plans would add interest. Unusual features and interesting facts about the house or the inhabitants, could also be included. The timeline is from the first days of the Merbein irrigation settlement in 1909 and up to and including the year, 1960.
To facilitate the recording of information, the MDHS has drawn up a form that should help contributors record the relevant information. For more information, or a Project Form, please contact MDHS First Houses Project Co-ordinator Lyn Adams 50 252996 or MDHS President, Bernadette Wells 50 25 2288, who is compiling the publication - (wellkins@hotkey.net.au)
Note: The book is now being compiled and will be published some time next year - 2021.
