Merbein and District Houses (up to and including 1950) is the next project being undertaken by the MDHS. Information on houses, of any construction or type, as long as they were lived in, is now being collected and a pro forma to guide contributions to this project has been prepared. More information on this will be available shortly. This project will be the basis for the next display in the MDHS rooms.
On Dec 17th, 2012, at the Merbein RSL rooms, MRCC's Cr. Judi Harris, launched the latest MDHS publication, 'Merbein Blockies and the Evolving Mechanization of Horticultural Implements and Practices', compiled by MDHS President, Bernadette Wells. The 254 page book includes hundreds of photos, many coloured, and tells the story, in words and pictures, of the evolution of horticultural and agricultural implements and practices over the last 100 years in the Merbein irrigation settlement and the nearby dryland blocks growing wheat. The book has been reprinted (March 2013) and is now available at the Merbein Newsagency, the Mildura Visitors Centre or from the Society rooms. The cost is $35 + $15 for postage and package. If you would like a copy, contact Bernadette Wells wellkins@hotkey.net.au or Lyn Adams lyn.adams45@yahoo.com MDHS Box 679 Merbeib Vic 3505.
2011 - 2012 MDHS Project: This display in the Society's rooms is now finished. It featured items from the book 'Merbein Blockies and the Evolving Mechanization of Horticultural Implements and Practices, compiled by MDHS member , Bernadette Wells in 2012.
Photographs of 'Horticultural & Agricultural Implements' used in the Merbein area (vineyards & farms) during the period 1909 to 1970, with a written description and history and use of each implement, where it was used and by whom it was used were submitted for the project. (This project had arisen from the spectactular selection of 'old' equipment that was displayed in the 2009 Merbein Centenary Street Parade. A photographic record will be one way of ensuring these many unique implements and the talents of many are not lost over time.)
